What is Shrove Tuesday?
Also known as Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, or Pancake Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday, 47 days before Easter Sunday. Historically, Christians have fasted from lots of delicious things during the season of Lent, including: fat, sugar and meat. As a way to use up the fat in their houses, Christians would have a feast day of eating pancakes and pastries before they were to abstain for the duration of Lent. Though we may not be as rigid about abstaining from these things in our day and age, we still celebrate the day before Lent with a pancake dinner as we prepare our hearts and minds for the season of Lent.
