Dear People of God at First Lutheran:
The year is drawing to a close and our days are getting shorter. Light becomes a scarcer commodity and in the church, our All Saints and Advent practices remind us of the power a lit candle can carry. A couple of weeks from now, the preaching text will be the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids, to tell us once again of the importance of keeping our lamps lit even and especially in dark times.
My colleague, Pr. Mark Feldmeir, used to say, “when your tank is depleted and your lamp goes out, your life will grow dim and dark, the doors will shut and your life will become indistinguishable from everybody else’s in the world. Like the bridesmaids, asking others to give their reserves to you doesn’t work: you cannot live off someone else’s store of hope, or joy. You have to have your own. So the story asks us, How can we tend to our store of oil to keep the flame burning?”
This is what this church has been trying to do in this past year: in the face of increasing poverty in our nation, challenges to our trust, we have asked you to continue to keep God’s people in your hearts. Your work in this community has made food available to hungry neighbors, transitional housing to a child of God and her daughter who are seeking more stable living accommodations, and it sent kids to camp to experience God in the mountains through this congregation. And whenever your store got depleted after engaging in those ministries, there was this church where you could find music and bread and wine and water and friends to feed your soul and replenish your store of hope.
You have been stalwarts through this tumultuous year and I thank you for keeping your lights of ministry burning. And I ask you to help us keep the lights of ministry lit in this next year: when we are observing 150 years of First Lutheran in Longmont, when we are expanding our collaboration with the OUR center by making the parish house available for transitional housing for two families, when we are seeking the next clergy for First that will take this congregation’s ministry to new levels.
Please, make the ministries of this next year possible with your thoughts, your prayers, your gifts of time and money, as we continue to seek to be Christ’s body in the world.
